David Feherty joins Golf Channel and NBC Sports after leaving CBS
After ending a 19-year relationship with CBS Sports, David Feherty made the natural move, signing a full-time deal with NBC Sports Group.
In the Tuesday announcement, NBC Sports Group detailed an expanded role for Feherty on Golf Channel and NBC, including PGA Tour golf broadcasts on the two networks.
"I'm really looking forward to this next step in my career, but I'll miss a lot of people who have had my back for nearly 20 years. And to be honest, I'm on the verge of soiling myself," said Feherty in a release. "However, I am looking forward to the new challenges and opportunities at NBC and Golf Channel. I haven't yet heard the over-under on me getting fired, but hey, I beat the odds last time."
Feherty will have a similar role as he did with CBS, serving as a walking and tower analyst. The Irishman-turned-American will also be "featured" during coverage of the Ryder Cup, Olympics and some PGA of America and European Tour events. He will be on the broadcast team for NBC and Golf Channel's coverage of the Open Championship, which starts in 2017.
The news comes two weeks after reports of a breakdown in contract extension talks between CBS and Feherty. Multiple reports suggested the sides could not agree on Feherty's future role. Feherty had been with CBS since 1997.
Feherty's eponymous talk show will continue to air on Golf Channel. Universal Television, a division of NBCUniversal, has a first-look development deal for potential Feherty-driven entertainment projects.
